Dmg Crs Full Stat BlockEspecially when we are dealing with constants and not variables. Coming to ask questions about the system is great, but we need all the relevant information if we are going to help and/or guide you down the right path.Well, actually, an opinion can be false if used in the wrong context or without all the facts present. However I just get annoyed when blanket statements are made with no basis in the actual mechanical system. As /u/Drewfro666 mentioned, we would be much better able to help you out if you posted a full stat block for the particular creature. Which admittedly, is what you were discussing here. However, just because assigning CR to a creature is vague, doesnt speak for the entire creation system as you suggest.Take a look at the in depth monster creation in the book. Its the reason I dont use it ever. It is dumb and clunky and doesnt make much sense to a reasonable mind. This is simply not true, opinion or not.I agree with you on the point of CR however. Instead, look into other methods of determining difficulty. The list goes on.All I'm saying is, yes, the CR and CR assigning in 5E is bad, but this is why, you shouldnt use it. Then, we can observe deeper how all of these pieces fit together, what the proficiency is, how to assign stats, how abilities change the difficulty, how they fit with other creature abilities, how to determine the health and hit dice of creatures, how certain creatures gain proficiency in skills and why that affects their general difficulty. Once you do this, start looking at some of the pre-generated beasties that WotC has given us, and you will begin to see the same methods the DMG is attempting to teach you in the examples. I could write a thousand words on the system and why it is so elegant beyond the seriously sloppy CR system, but I wont make you read the ramblings of a delusional mind. In fact, lets just forget CR for a moment, since we have already made the determination that it serves little purpose in the grand scheme of things. However, if you dont have the time or ability to do this, I suggest you look into other methods beyond what you have already tried to gain the same result. Grab a map, grab your players Character sheets (you have copies right?), grab your monster stat blocks, and play it out. Which, is one of the reasons you came here right? Certainly the whole point of your post wasnt to just complain about a system you are going to use anyway? Right? If you are truly concerned about difficulty rating for your players, my biggest suggestion is actually to throw the entire DMG out the window. Stop looking at it, forget it even exists unless you are dealing with something like Summon Animals or something else that specifically uses the ruling for CR.I'm not trying to say you were wrong, I'm attempting to help you learn how you can complete the task you intend in a different way. This means, based on what CR is designed for, we dont need it. CR was intended to create a baseline difficulty rating so that it could be used at the drop of a hat to create an encounter.Correct me if I'm wrong, but you are not trying to create an encounter at the drop of a hat.right?Your intention, as I read it, is to create a specific encounter for your players to overcome in the upcoming session.
